Yesterday, senior representatives from Microsoft, Google, AOL, Yahoo! and Hulu took to a stage in New York in an unprecedented display of unity to lay claim to that “digital video is no longer a sideshow.”

That very rallying cry opened proceedings at the Digitas NewFront event, when their Worldwide Chief Creative and Strategy Officer, Mark Beeching, proclaimed that audiences online “match and sometimes exceed those of network TV,” but we haven’t capitalised on that fact yet.

His rousing speech gave way to a deluge of digital delights from trade industry figures, content creators, celebrities and creatives, all regaling stories as compelling evidence that there really might be something in this thing we call the web, and that brands and their agencies needed to sit up and listen.

Whether it was Piers Morgan talking about how he’s knocked his own ratings out of the park with one Tweet telling his fans Charlie Sheen was about to enter his studio, or Felicia Day of The Guild urging brands to keep being authentic, know their audience and add some value, or Michael Lazerow from Buddy Media making us giggle by suggesting advertisers let consumers drive their message, not a couple of people from the boardroom; it was all head-nodding, shareable soundbite-filled fodder that engaged the mind and energised the soul.

Really!

There were, as well, some notes of caution. If we’re to get this right, the content needs to land right. We’re dealing with smaller screens, smaller budgets and audiences are mobile. We heard there was a distinction between micro-content (Tweets and photos) and hero-content (big video), and that they should be inextricably linked across devices and hugely relevant.

The real-time beauty of the web means real-time access to beautiful data. We were encouraged to take that data and optimise the content to drive business results. Shocking I know, that at a branding event we should be talking essentially about driving sales, but it was all there in a warehouse next to the Hudson River.

Appearances by Heidi Klum, Andy Cohen, Rashida Jones and Kristin Chenoweth, all added a splash of colour and humour to what was a great day for the industry.

Congratulations and thank you to Digitas for their vision and execution of a wonderful event, and also to our partners in the Digital Content NewFronts for uniting with us to take digital content forward in a really big, big way.

Check out our photos on Facebook and our post from our Digital Showcase from earlier in the week for more on our participation and find out more about our big offerings at our advertising site.

It was a lovely setting, tasty food and flowing Champagne all making for the ideal evening of celebration and even more story telling!

We’re very proud to submit our UK winners to the global contest – watch this space for more news. It was a wonderful night filled with fabulous food, great company, and more importantly celebrating the winners and all those who entered the creative awards.

Entries were received from across the UK covering a range of different brands and non-profits; it was wonderful to see how so many of the entries used our multiple Microsoft platforms to bring their stories to life with Xbox, Windows Mobile, MSN and even deepzoom!

The winning two stood out for their strong creative ideas, expertly executed through the power of storytelling. In a closely contested competition, with an impressive display of creativity and innovative thinking the winners were Sam Drake from Goodstuff (2nd from right) won the not-for-profit category and Kathryn DeKeyser (2nd from left) from OMD was named the brand category and overall UK winner.

Both winners received a £5000 cash prize and a Microsoft device bundle worth £800 – £1000, and as overall UK winner Kathryn will also receive $150,000 worth of Microsoft Advertising UK Media to bring her story to life.

Chair of the UK judging panel James Hayr, Head of Specialist Sales at Microsoft Advertising, commented:  “We were deeply impressed by the quality of the UK entries. They sparked plenty of animated debate amongst our judges, providing us with real food for thought in considering what makes a really effective story for the digital space. The winning entries stood out for their skillful combination of strong objectives, deep understanding of the capabilities of Microsoft Advertising platforms and, most importantly, creative and compelling ideas.”

Both Sam and Kathryn’s submissions will now be put forward to the final stage of the competition, when their ideas will go head-to-head with the winning entries from all markets participating in the competition. We’re extremely proud of our UK entries and are confident they will do well. The final judging panel, chaired by David Sable, Global CEO at Y&R, will pick two global winners, to be announced on or around June 1st, who will be treated to a week-long Cannes LionsVIP experience in June 2012.

I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank all the judges:

· Charlotte McEleny, Senior Reporter of New Media Age

· Mike Hoban, Chief Marketing Officer for Confused.com

· Ilana Fox, Head of Social Engagement for Shopcade and author

· Tom Hyde, Planner at Beattie McGuinness Bungay

· James Hayr, Head of Specialist Media at Microsoft Advertising UK

Last week, Bing UK launched a brand new consumer campaign based on their new brand positioning “Bing is for Doing”. The campaign is designed to engage with “Connected Socialisers;” who are highly social (on the web and off), want to get the most out of life, and don’t want to be preached at by brands but want an exchange of value and to be actively involved.

Bing invites the Great British public to tell them what they want to do via the Bing UK Facebook page www.facebook.com/BingUK- from learning how to cook a new dish, to climbing Mount Everest. Bing will make the best ideas happen for a lucky few.

As you may have seen in recent weeks, some developers are earning big money with our Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone. Last week both GeekWorks LLC and Four Bros Studio highlighted their positive experiences with the Microsoft Advertising solution, outlining how easy it was to install the Microsoft Advertising SDK, manage their ad units on pubCenter and start earning money. Here are their stories:

Geekworks LLC Earned $245K in One Year with Microsoft Advertising

On April 17, 2012, Geekworks LLC publicized their great results of 900 to 1,200 downloads a day with a total of 436,349 downloads of Shuriken Ninja since its launch. Across all of their games, they’ve reached 145M impressions, at an average of $1.69 eCPM. If you do the math, that’s $245K in a year.

Shuriken Ninja reached number 2 in all free applications and is available for download on the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Shuriken Ninja initially released as a paid game for $1 in April 2011, but with limited success. Within a few months, they shifted strategies and turned to Microsoft Advertising to monetize as an ad-in app free game with amazing results. As Mat Newport of Geekworks said:

“We were pretty floored that Shuriken Ninja has been so popular. We were obviously able to make more money as a free game with ads.”

So, why did they choose Microsoft Advertising? Matt Williams of Geekworks explains why:

Microsoft Advertising seemed like the right choice. It was easy to get started, and then go back to doing what we love, programming the games.the return we get from utilizing pubCenter cannot be discounted. It is what allows us to devote a significant amount of our time to planning, designing, and coding. ”

Mat Newport and Matt Williams are the two-man development team for GeekWorks LLC., based out of Minnesota, USA. They’ve had several games in the top 100 apps on the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Upon publication of this blog, Geekworks released a new 3D game, Paint Tanks 3D; described as a “real-time fully 3D tank battle royale.” They are excited to be among the first independent full 3D games available on Windows Phone. You can download it on Windows Phone Marketplacetoday.

FourBros Studio’s “Taptitude” Earns $1,750 in One Day with Microsoft Advertising

Last week, FourBros Studio shared fantastic monetization results for their Windows Phone game “Taptitude” that brought in average revenue of $800 a day within the last month[DC1] . Even better, the daily revenue has continued to climb for “Taptitude” reaching $1750 a day on Sunday, April 22, 2012.

Taptitude is a collection of over 60 competitive mini-games developed by FourBros Studio, #1 top rated, and is available for download on the Windows Phone Marketplace.

We were very excited to hear about their success, and asked FourBrothers why they chose to monetize Taptitude with the Microsoft Advertising SDK. Brandon Furtwangler explained:

“Anecdotally, we heard Microsoft Advertising monetized better than other solutions out there. We decided to go with Microsoft Advertising and we’ve been happy with the revenue results since. Plus, the Microsoft Advertising SDK was easy to implement. It registers itself, handles all the network communications, and rendering. All we do is register on pubCenter and provide guidance on what ad-units we want to use.”

Steve, Brandon, Nathan and Tyler Furtwangler are the four developers / brothers behind the development of Taptitude (Note: three of them work at Microsoft).
